Description

This hot chocolate is easy to make and velvety smooth. It has the perfect chocolate flavor and makes the perfect amount for the family.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 ounces of Ghirardelli 60% cacao bittersweet chocolate, (1/2 of a 4 ounce bar)
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups half & half
  • Whipped cream or homemade vanilla marshmallows for topping

Instructions

  1. Add the chocolate and water to a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, and heat until melted. Add the sugar and salt.  Turn heat to medium and bring to a boil. Boil for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add the whipping cream and half & half. While stirring constantly, heat the mixture over medium heat until it’s scalding but not boiling. Remove from the heat.
  3. OPTIONAL: Use a hand mixer to blend the hot chocolate until it’s smooth and frothy, or use a milk frother if you like a foamy top.
  4. Pour into individual mugs while hot, and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, or homemade vanilla marshmallows.
  5. Refrigerate leftovers. Stir thoroughly before reheating. Reheat in the microwave until hot.
